After creating a new tournament, several options are available to modify the statistics for the tournament. Some options become unavailable once games have been entered, so the user should be aware of the characteristics of the tournament beforehand.
The first field, “Tournament Name”, contains the name of the tournament, which will appear in generated web reports. Note that this name does not have to be the name given to the save file.
Under “Question Values”, place a checkmark beside the question values that will be used in the tournament. The actual value of the questions can be entered in the fields beside the checkboxes. SQBS recognizes the first field as a “power”, the second field as a normal tossup value, the third field as a negative value, and the fourth as a spare question value. By default, the first three boxes are checked with values of 15, 10, and –5, respectively. Note that values cannot be unselected once there is an instance of that value in a game.
“Stat Tracking” affects how information is displayed in generated reports. If “Track Toss-Ups Heard” is selected, the number of tossups heard can be entered in the Game Entry screen, and reports will include the number of tossups heard and points per tossup heard. If “Track Power and Neg Stats” is selected, the ratio of powers to negs will be displayed, using the definition of power and neg from the Question Values list. If “Track Lightning Round Stats” is selected, a new field appears in the Game Entry screen and lightning round stats appear in the reports. Note that the lightning round checkbox cannot be unselected if lightning round data has been entered in a game. Finally, selecting “Use Divisions” makes the Divisions field available, described below.
Select the method of handling bonuses under “Bonus Conversion Tracking”. If “None”, no bonus information will be kept and it will be assumed that the total game score is the sum of tossup points (and lightning round points, if applicable). If “Automatic” (the default), the program automatically calculates the bonus conversion: the number of bonuses heard will equal the number of tossups earned, and the bonus points equals the difference remaining when tossup and lightning points are subtracted from the total game score. If “Manual” is selected, the user must enter the number of bonuses heard and number of bonus points. For “Manual Hear, Auto Points”, bonus points are calculated as with the “Automatic” method, but the user manually enters the number of bonuses heard (useful if a format has some tossups that do not lead to bonuses). “Manual with Bouncebacks” creates the bounceback bonus fields, allowing manual entering of all bonus and bounceback statistics. Finally, “Auto with Bouncebacks” creates the bounceback bonus fields and automatically calculates bounceback heard (potential points) and points scored. Bonus points need to be entered manually. NOTE: this option is only available only Mac version of SQBS. If the Tournament file is SavedAs Windows‐compatible format this setting reverts to “Manual with Bouncebacks”.
If “Use Divisions” was selected earlier, the Divisions field appears on the Tournament Setup screen. Enter the names of the divisions, one per line. Once division names have been entered, the division of a particular team becomes an option in the Roster Entry. Note that divisions can be changed in the middle of a tournament (for example, shuffling preliminary divisions into playoff brackets), but any prior information about divisions will be lost once a new set of divisions is created.
Finally, a field is available to select the maximum numbers of seats in play on a side at one time. By default, there are 4 players maximum per side. This option triggers how many names on a roster get registered with one game played by default on the Game Entry screen. The number of games (or half-games) a player actually has can still be manually overridden in the game entry screen. Note that this option is not available in the Windows version, and will revert to the default (4) for Windows‐compatible files.
