From dmanet@math.utwente.nl Tue May 18 13:08:04 1999 Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 13:45:48 +0200 From: Discrete Mathematics and Algorithms Network Reply-To: DO99@rutcor.rutgers.edu To: DMA-LIST@NIC.SURFNET.NL Subject: Second announcement & Call for Papers SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS WORKSHOP ON DISCRETE OPTIMIZATION (DO'99) DIMACS/RUTCOR, Rutgers University July 25 - 30, 1999 http://rutcor.rutgers.edu/~do99 The updated announcement below includes, besides the information contained in the first announcement, new information concerning: 1. Registration (including deadlines) 2. Support for participants (including the availability of an NSF grant) 3. Accommodations (including housing request deadlines) 4. Publications ============================================= GOALS Discrete optimization underwent a tumultuous development in the last half century and had a particularly spectacular growth in the last few decades. The main goal of this workshop is to survey the state of the art in discrete optimization. This goal will be achieved by the presentation of expository lectures presenting the major subareas of the field, including its theoretical foundations, its methodology and applications. The surveys will be presented by some of the most prominent researchers in the field. DO'99 will also provide a forum for the presentation of new developments in discrete optimization. To accomplish this goal, DO'99 will feature a series of sessions for the presentation of contributed talks, presenting the latest re search of the participants. DO'99 is being held 22 years after DO'77, which had very similar goals, and whose collection of surveys (Discrete Optimization I and II, Annals of Discrete Mathematics, vols. 4 and 5, P.L. Hammer, E.L. Johnson and B.H. Korte, eds., North Holland, Amsterdam, New York, Oxford, 1979) is still frequently used. It is hoped that DO'99 will present the latest state of the art in discrete optimization and will provide a similarly useful source of information and inspiration to the community of discrete optimizers as DO'77 did 22 years ago. Venue The DO'99 workshop will take place on the Busch Campus of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, between July 25-30, 1999. Invited Survey Talks Egon Balas (Carnegie Mellon University) Lift-and-project: progress and some open questions Peter Brucker (University of Osnabrueck) Complex scheduling problems Rainer Burkard (Technical University of Graz) Assignment problems Vasek Chvatal (Rutgers University)On the solution of traveling salesman problems Gerard Cornuejols (Carnegie Mellon University) Packing and covering Yves Crama (University of Liege) Optimization models in production planning Fred Glover (University of Colorado) Tabu search & evolutionary methods: unexpected developments Alan Hoffman (IBM Research Center)Greedy algorithms in linear programming problems Karla Hoffman (George Mason University) Applications of column-generation and constraint-generation methods Toshihide Ibaraki (Kyoto University) Graph connectivity & its augmentation Bernhard Korte (University of Bonn) Gigahertz-processors need discrete optimization Jakob Krarup (University of Copenhagen) Locational decisions with friendly and obnoxious facilities Tom Magnanti (M.I.T.)Network design Silvano Martello (University of Bologna) Bin packing problems in two and three dimensions George L. Nemhauser (Georgia Institute of Technology) Discrete Optimization in Air Transportation Jim Orlin and Ravi Ahuja (M.I.T.) In view of space limitations, registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. The registration fee is $200 ($50 for students) until May 20, 1999, and $300 ($75 for students) after that date. Registration fees are payable in U.S. currency, by mailing to the conference address either a check drawn on a U.S. bank, or an American Express Travellers check. Checks are to be made payable to RUTCOR, Rutgers University, should include sender's signature, and if possible, should be mailed insured. In order to satisfy the prepayment requirements of the housing units, refunds will not be issued after June 22, 1999. If a cancellation request reaches DO'99 before June 22, 1999, 50% of deposits will be refunded. Support for Participants A recently approved grant from the National Science Foundation will provide partial support for participants of DO'99. The major part of the funds is dedicated to support junior researchers, post-doctoral fellows and graduate students. Applications from U.S. institutions are strongly encouraged. Special attention will be given to applications coming from women and members of underrepresented minorities. Interested participants should urgently apply for such support to the conference organizers. Applications should be accompanied by a curriculum vitae, and in the case of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, by at least one letter of recommendation. Submission of Papers Titles and abstracts (up to 2 pages long) of contributed papers should be sent by email, fax or regular mail to the workshop address. Relevant contributions will be accepted until all slots are filled. The University Inn has rooms with 2 beds at the per person rates of $69 for single, and $42 for double occupancy, including breakfast. The Inn is located on Douglass Campus (see the map here) in a pleasant wooded area. A shuttle bus will provide transportation between the Inn and the conference si te for the participants of DO'99 every morning and evening. The conference site as well as the center of New Brunswick and Rutgers University can also be accessed by the free Intercampus Bus Service. Silver Apartments are located on Busch Campus, within walking distance to the conference site (see map here). The furnished apartments have a kitchen area, bathroom, living room, and two bedrooms, with two beds in each. Per person rates are $47.80 for single and $34.05 for double occupancy. For reservations, contact DO'99 (by mail, fax or email) no later than May 20, 1999. Please include exact dates of arrival, departure and room preference(s), including room sharing. Click here for directions, maps and further info on bus services at Rutgers.
