LOCATION Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia, is a historic port city on the east coast of Canada with a population of about 350,000 . The city was founded in 1749 by Governor Edward Cornwallis with 2,500 settlers and was CanadaÕs first British town. One of the main attractions was the fact that Halifax Harbour is the worldÕs second largest natural harbour after Sydney, Australia. Halifax has many museums, parks, shopping centres, as well as a casino. The Halifax Citadel, an historic site, is an excellent example of a 19th century bastion. The Public Gardens, begun in 1836, covers 17 acres of winding pathways, lush flower beds, fountains and duck ponds. It is considered to be the finest original formal Victoria garden in North America. All these points of interest, and many more, are within walking distance of the conference and hotel sites. Overlapping with the conference, Halifax will be hosting the 11th annual Halifax International Busker Festival (August 7th to 17th). Nova Scotia consists of a long, ragged peninsula and a large island -- Cape Breton Island -- thrusting eastward into the Atlantic. It presents a beautiful maritime countryside. The classic image of Nova Scotia is a pocket harbour ringed by rocks, evergreens and colorful wooden homes, opening eastward to a clean, cold sea. Nova Scotia Fact: Nova Scotia is the world's largest exporter of lobster (16 million kilograms - 36 million pounds caught yearly). THE WEATHER Nova ScotiaÕs average temperature for August is 17.5C, but they have a saying in Nova Scotia, ÒIf you donÕt like the weather, wait five minutesÓ (i.e. the situation is highly changeable). We STRONGLY suggest you bring a sweater and raincoat as well as your usual summer attire! TRAVEL INFORMATION Please ask your local travel agent or nearest Canadian Consulate or Embassy for travel documents that are required for visiting Canada. Air Canada is the ÒOfficial AirlineÓ for WADSÕ97. Call Air Canada at 1-800-361-7585 to take advantage of savings of up to 50% on regular economy class fares. Be sure to mention EVENT NUMBER CV971331 when booking your fare. The Halifax International Airport is 35 km from downtown Halifax along Highway 102. Taxi fare from the Halifax International Airport to downtown Halifax is about $35.00. There is also a shuttle bus service to many of the major hotels costing about $20.00 for a round-trip ticket. Thrifty Car Rental has an outlet at the airport (see Car Rental). If traveling by car there are three major highways which bring you directly to Halifax. Highway 101 will bring you from the Annapolis Valley and Yarmouth. Highway 103 will bring you from the South Shore. Highway 102 will bring you from New Brunswick and central Nova Scotia. Halifax can be reached by both bus and rail. Via Rail provides train service throughout Canada and connects with the US Amtrak services. The train station is located in the south end of Halifax, close to the university campus. Acadian Lines provides bus service throughout Nova Scotia and connects with SMT Eastern in New Brunswick, Voyager in Quebec and Ontario and Greyhound from the United States. There is ferry service from the United States to Nova Scotia.
