Sufficient Statistics

• To compute the likelihood in the thumbtack example we only require NH and NT (the number of heads and the number of tails)NH and NT are sufficient statistics for the binomial distribution

• A sufficient statistic is a function that summarizes, from the data, the relevant information for the likelihood

  • If s(D) = s(D’ ), then L(? |D) = L(? |D’)
