Traverse of Central and Eastern Nepal (2011)
Leg 11: From Shyabru Besi to Barabise (April 6 - 12)
During the hike through Ganesh Himal I had developed a tooth infection that forced me to
return to Kathmandu upon reaching Shyabru Besi, on the evening of April 3. On the April 4 I had a
root canal at Ciwec Dental Clinic (excellent) in
Kathmandu and on the April 5 I returned to Shyabru Besi. There, by crossing the Bote
Koshi, we shifted from the Ganesh Himal
to the Langtang Himal
region. My original plan had been to follow Langtang Khola up to Kyanjing Gompa, then cross Ganja La, go to Tarkeghyang
and from there to Barabise. However, we were several
days late relative to our initial schedule. Since I had been to Kyanjing Gompa and Ganja La in
2002 to acclimatize before going to Cho Oyu, I
decided, instead, to take the shorter route through the Gosainkund
lakes and Laurebina pass (4600m).

A group of children from that same village. I took the photo from
inside my tent; they were very interested by my setup for the night.
Reaching the town of Barabise (on a day
when there was a small demonstration in the main street). Barabise
is located on the road that connects Kathmandu to Tibet at Zhangmu.
It was the only ″major″ road that I crossed during the entire
traverse of Nepal.
