Current Research Projects

Jeffrey Bub is currently on leave at the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information, Vienna, Austria, where he is working on a research project 'The Information-Theoretic Turn in Quantum Foundations.' The project addresses an actively researched problem area in quantum information: the significance of information-theoretic constraints such as 'information causality' in the demarcation of quantum mechanics from other ‘foil’ theories. The working hypothesis is that the presence of information-theoretic concepts at the fundamental level in theoretical physics reflects something profound about the nature of physical reality.

Mathias Frisch is on leave during the 2011-2012 academic year at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich, where he has a fellowship for experiences researchers from the German Alexander-von-Humboldt foundation. He is working on a research project "The role of causal representations in physics" examining the question whether time-asymmetric causal relations can play a role even in physical theories with time-reversal invariant dynamical laws and investigating possible connections between the causal asymmetry and other physical asymmetries, such as that embodied in the second law of thermodynamics.

Jeff Horty is currently visiting the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University.
